About Me

Susan People come to counseling at a time of great vulnerability and distress. Choosing the right counselor may not be easy. In order to help you get to know me better as a counselor, let me tell you about my practice. I work with three different types of clients: individual adults, couples, and adolescents.

When working with adults as individuals I tailor my therapeutic approach to the needs of my client in an environment that is caring and safe. My goal is for you to feel empowered to change problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, so you can develop your fullest potential.

I also specialize in couples therapy. Being in a fulfilling couples partnership takes love, work and personal growth. As a trained and experienced therapist, I help struggling partners break ineffective patterns of relationship and develop better ones. My aim is to help you learn new ways of communicating so that together, you and your partner can develop a vision of the kind of life you want to build together.

The third group I work with is adolescents 12 - 18.  When working with young people, I use a variety of interventions that are metaphorical in nature such as art, games, play therapy, and bibliotherapy. I also believe in working closely with parents to coordinate parenting and therapy strategies.

The years I spent in South America helped me become a culturally sensitive counselor who strives to understand and relate to my client’s background, ethnicity, and belief system, no matter where he or she is from.

I believe that counseling is a partnership. My education, training and experience provide me with an expertise, but you are the expert of your life. Working openly and honestly together, I believe we can achieve positive results.

As you reflect on which counselor might fit your needs best, I would like to leave you with the thought that counseling is an exciting opportunity for personal growth. Personal growth can be hard, even scary at times, but the rewards of having a richer, more fulfilling life are worth it.
